Welcome to the de Havilland Educational Trust (DHET)

Helping keep vintage aviation alive in the 21st Century

Our aim is to help preserve our aviation heritage.

We do this by encouraging vintage aircraft enthusiasts and professionals to develop their flying and engineering skills.

Each year the Charity supports a number of people on their first steps towards flying or looking after historic aircraft types, particularly those de Havilland machines still flying some 100 years after Sir Geoffrey’s then-revolutionary DH.60 Moth first took to the skies. Other popular de Havilland types include the legendary DH.82 Tiger Moth, on which thousands of military pilots learned to fly during the Second World War, and the DHC-1 Chipmunk; a more recent trainer, which first flew in 1946 and the type on which His Majesty the King learned to fly in 1968.

DHET’s remit is to educate the public in the work of renowned British aircraft designer Sir Geoffrey de Havilland and his eponymous de Havilland Aircraft Company, which was absorbed into what became British Aerospace in 1977. The Charity was founded in 2006 and pursues its goals chiefly by awarding bursaries and scholarships to promote vintage aviation among young people keen to become engineers and pilots.

As a charity, none of what we do would be possible without the support of our benefactors. We need support in raising money to fund our activities.  If you would like to donate please get in touch.

How DHET can help you

Engineers: How Can DHET Help You?

You may wish to apply for a bursary. If you already hold an engineer’s licence or inspector’s ticket, we may be able to help you with learning the traditional skills required to maintain de Havilland aircraft and engines. If you are just starting out as an engineer, we may be able to put you in touch with experienced engineers to guide and mentor you.

Pilots: How can DHET help you?

If you already hold a licence, we may be able to help you with some of the cost of a type conversion to solo standard on the Tiger Moth or, potentially, other de Havilland types. If you are training for a licence on a de Havilland aircraft, we may be able to assist with the final hurdle of the skills test.
